Ecological SPACE (Sustainable
Production and Consumption) Project |
How much energy, water and other resources can we consume,
and how much pollution can we produce, without infringing
on the right of future generations to use earth's resources?
"Eco-space" (environmental capacity) is the term used to describe
what each person on earth would be entitled to if a sustainable
amount of the planet's resources were distributed equally.
The Eco Space model shows that our greatest challenge in pursuing
a sustainable global society is to forge universal guiding
principles which offer an alternative to the path of excessive
production/consumption still followed by advanced countries
(the North). Shared global principles (i.e. the environmental
capacity concept) are a necessary foundation for an effective,
global standard of justice, shared by all people, that gives
full consideration to north-south and inter-generational equity.
